Animal Type: mantaray

Manta Ray

The diamond shaped Manta birostris is commonly known as the manta ray. This
cartilaginous fish is the largest of the rays. The largest manta rays measure
almost 30 feet from tip to tip, with weights exceeding 3,000 pounds. The
average specimen grows to be about 22 feet wide. Most individuals are black or
brown on top, but their mottled undersides have distinctive patterns that
allow humans to tell one ray from another.

Mermaid

Since the Middle Ages, sailors, fishermen, and others who make their livings
on the sea have reported sighting a strange creature, half-human, half-fish.
Over the years and across the globe they have been called many things: merrows
in Ireland, sea-trows in the Shetlands, havfine in Norway, Meerfrau in
Germany, Rusalka in Russia, and river-Witches in Africa. Despite these
numerous sightings, most attempts to capture or even approach these creatures
over the years have failed.

Animal Type: narwhal

Narwhal

Monodon monoceros means, literally, "single toothed horn." This is an apt
description of the narwhal and its distinctive tusk, but the common name,
narwhal, is just as appropriate. In Old Norse, narwhal means "corpse whale,"
probably referring to the pale, almost white color these animals obtain as
they age. Although they are born dark in color, by maturity they are
grayish-blue with white blotches. These blotches increase with age, so that
elderly animals are almost entirely white, or corpse-like.

Pacific Octopus

The reclusive giant octopus of the Pacific should be a source of great
entertainment for your guests--if you can coax him out of his house. These
gigantic cephalopods can grow up to 30 feet in diameter (measured from arm to
arm). They build and maintain homes throughout their Pacific habitats and are
very reluctant to come out and entertain visitors.

Shortfin Mako Shark

The mako shark gets its name from the Maori language of New Zealand. In Maori,
the term "mako-mako" means "man eater"--an apt name for a fish that has
destroyed boats and killed fisherman while fighting the hook. This
cartilaginous fish is also known as the Blue Pointer, the Mackerel shark, the
Snapper shark, and the Bonito shark in various parts of the world.
Scientifically known as Isurus oxyrinchus, the mako shark is commonly
considered a game fish by fishermen around the world. This shark is not easy
to hook, however. While fighting to escape the hook, the mako shark has been
known to leap 20 feet into the air and travel at speeds of 22 miles per hour,
making it one of the fastest fish in the world.

Sperm Whale

The sperm whale, or Physeter catodon, is the largest member of the
Physeteridae family. Although the largest of the toothed whales, the sperm
whale was on its way to becoming the rarest during the days of whale hunting.
The sperm whale is prized for the spermaceti organ in its head. Each
spermaceti organ may contain up to 3,000 quarts of valuable spermaceti oil.

Tiger Shark

The tiger shark may very well be the most dangerous shark in the world.
Fishermen catching these monsters (up to 21 feet in length) on hook and reel
have found human body parts in the stomachs of these sharks. The tiger shark
(or Galeocerdo cuvier) is named for the fierce stripes that characterize young
adult animals of the species, giving it a resemblance to one of the most
dangerous predators on land.

West Indian Manatee

The Manatee, along with its close relative the Dugong, are the only
plant-eating marine mammals alive today. Unrelated to the cetacean family
(which includes whales and dolphins), Manatees are part of the family
Trichechidae. Manatees are more closely related to aardvarks and elephants
than to whales.

Whale Shark

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is the largest fish in the world. This shark
is so large that before its scientific discovery in 1828, fishermen who caught
a glimpse of the whale shark often thought they were viewing a sea monster. In
Japan, the whale shark is called ebisuzame and is considered good luck. In
Vietnam it is known as Ca Ong. Vietnamese fisherman pray to a god of the same
name.
