Atlantic Swordfish

The broadbill swordfish, Xiphias gladius, is a member of the class of bony
fish, Osteichthyes. The swordfish gets its name from its most distinctive
feature -- the elongated upper jaw that looks like a sword. The swordfish's
sword is so impressive that Christopher Columbus brought one back with him as
a souvenir of the New World.

Giant Squid

For many years, the Giant Squid has been one of the great mysteries of the
undersea world. Architeuthis dux, the world's largest invertebrate, was
considered a maritime legend for many years. Legend became fact when Giant
Squid remains washed up on beaches were identified. Scientists have recorded
over 200 giant squid found on beaches and over 30 found tangled in the nets of
deep sea fishermen. Until now, though, no one has ever seen a giant squid
alive, much less kept one alive in captivity.

Green Sea Turtle

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) doesn't actually have green skin. The
green fat deposits beneath the skin give this turtle its name. These turtles
travel the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, primarily in the tropics,
using sunlight to help them navigate. They travel to coastal areas to feed and
to sandy beaches to lay eggs, sometimes migrating more than 500 miles.

Hammerhead Shark

The great hammerhead shark, or Sphyrna mokarran, is the largest of the nine
species of hammerheads. Hammerheads are a distinct group of sharks with a
wide, flat, almost rectangular head with eyes at the sides. The great
hammerhead is one of the largest of the predatory sharks. The great hammerhead
averages eleven feet in length, but has been known to grow up to 20 feet long,
weighing anywhere from 500 to 1000 pounds. The first dorsal fin is very tall
and pointed. This is the triangular fin associated with sharks by most people.
Hammerheads have a second, shorter dorsal fin. Despite being shorter, this fin
can still be as long as five percent of the shark's total body length.

Humpback Whale

Although the humpback whale gets its common name from the small bumps on its
back, its Latin name, Megaptera novaeangliae, means "huge wings, New
England"--the "huge wings" of these enormous baleen whales are their flippers,
and although often spotted in New England waters, humpback whales are found
all over the world.
